Ok, here we go...
We are assembling a product that has several individual parts, which we accomplish in our "Manufacturing" Database- Location. We now have a need to maintain serialization control on not only the top level assembly but the components that are used to build it.
As an example, we have an assembly that actually has a "sub-assembly" within it (since preliminary assembly operations are required (a "build") for that item prior to becoming part of the top level assembly- another "build"). Not sure at this point how to serialize each individual component, also control does not need to be by individual, meaning all assemblies produced on Run 1 are now Serial A-01 through A-99, but rather by Lot, meaning all assemblies produced on Run 1 are Lot A. Internal components of the assemblies produced on Run 1 could be varying in Lot, e.g. Lot B rivets, Lot C handles, etc.
To add another dimension, we then "move" by transfer from our Manufacturing Database to our "Finishing Database". What left Manufacturing as a top level assembly, now becomes an individual item used within yet another assembly...which of course has other components that require lot control...After a "build" in the Finishing database we are then ready to move (another transfer) the "completed" item into our Sales location database, where it can be used by itself, added to an assembly or as part of a container. We then have the charge of tying the serialized item (and all of it's subcomponents) to an order/invoice.
As a side note, these are physical as well as electronic locations we are moving product through, so ID tagging is a must to match electronic transfer paperwork.
Open for all suggestions, either using tools within Atrex to achieve this goal, or outside database that we can integrate. Even contemplated a spreadsheet document per SKU that could be compiled and "attached" to the top level product by way similiar of attaching a document to the customer file as offered in Atrex now (document tab). Then we could manual enter the top level serial number (which by logic would say it should encompass all of the lots that make up the item) onto the sales order, or something like that.
I think I just met myself coming round the corner.....help.
Most thankful for any advice or info,
Tara
